A total of 198 North Jefferson City lots were purchased for future park and open space development.

It opened in 1836 and served as a maximum security prison until it was decommissioned in 2004.
This prison housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including James Earl Ray, Sonny Liston, and Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd.
The Times magazine once called the prison “the bloodiest 47 acres in America” because more than 40 inmates were executed there.
In 2004, it was replaced by the Jefferson City Correctional Center.

1. Clark’s Hill/Norton State Historic Site
Tourists to Clark’s Hill/Norton State Historic Site can learn about the hill’s fascinating history, dating back to the epic journey of Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It is located high above the Missouri and Osage rivers,
On June 1-3, 1804, they camped near the foot of Clark’s Hill, and on June 2, 1804, Captain Clark ascended the hill.
He enjoyed the summit of two Indian mounds and the confluence of the Missouri and Osage rivers as he recorded the experience as a “splendid prospect” in his journal.
He stood on top of the mountain and watched and measured the rivers.
Today, these two Indian mounds and three others can be seen along the half-mile forest path that leads to the overlook of both rivers.
