How to Find Work at a Canadian Ski Resort

0
By Larry Frank on September 19, 2023 Articles, Career, Job Opportunities, Tips

Depending on the time of year, there are various types of employment adapted to the needs of the moment, working in ski resorts or as a lifeguard on the beach are among the most representative examples.

As we have already left the summer behind, and the cold is just around the corner, in this article we will talk about how to work in ski resorts, the working conditions, the possible jobs that we could find within them and one of the biggest ski resorts in Canada.

How hard is getting a skiing job in Canada?

Getting a job in a ski resort can be somewhat complicated at first because it is not a “typical” job. It can be a very favourable point, since it is something that fewer people can think of, and therefore, there is less competition.

Getting a skiing job

For those who want to work in ski resorts, it is important to bear in mind that not only are people hired who have sent their CV when a Company requests workers, but it is also very useful to make use of self-application letters, sending them together with the CV, and review the websites of the places where you want to work, to look for offers and see the conditions.

List of possible jobs in a ski resort

The offers to work in ski resorts are very varied, usually, they are searching for:

  • Monitors
  • Waiters
  • Track or gondola operators
  • Office workers
  • Salesmen
  • Drivers of treadmill machines
  • Lifeguards
  • Ski instructors
  • Shop vendor

Apart from the usual offers, if you consider that your skills and knowledge can be useful for something that is not among the job listings, you should indeed send out your application.

The more adventurous can also choose to send their applications to work in ski resorts in other countries, Canada for example hires thousands of people year after year to be part of its snow team.

Most stations have a very large staff of employees, generally between 600 and 800 employees, and the salary ranges between 800 and 3,000 euros, depending on the role performed and the training of each person.

Higher wages are rare, but it is also true that starting amounts can be increased by tips.

In many cases, accommodation and allowances for food and basic necessities are also included, so it is not only necessary to assess the salary itself, but also take into account if any advantage is included for the elderly, or if tips can be received.

Best time to send your resume

As for the best time to send our resume to work in ski resorts, most companies start looking for staff in the months of May or June, but many people leave their position when the year ends.

Although if the season of skiing has already started at the time you send your CV, you will still have a chance of being selected.

Drawback about getting a skiing job

It must be borne in mind that jobs in ski resorts are temporary, so even if a position is achieved in one of them for several years, there will always be some months in which no work is being done.

For those who have a special interest in this type of work, it should be noted that the best paid are usually ski instructors with specialized training that takes time, but if you finally get to work at it, it is worth it for the high salary that is perceived.

Applying as a foreigner

Canada boasts of some world’s most famous ski stations and some of the best heliskiing you can find globally.

Depending on your original country, you may need a visa to gain entrance into Canada for work.

You might be eligible to apply via the IEC scheme (International Experience Canada).

If you visit Canada as part of your GAP year, you can do worse than contact operations such as BUNAC and Smaller Earth who will help in sorting out your visa.

UK Tour Operators in Canada

Resorts vary greatly in Canada. From the relatively mild Canadian Olympic Village (COP) to the prestigious heliskiing of British Columbia there are resorts for every level.

The resorts in Canada provide the normal chalet and hotel jobs but are also key and pretty handy for cities where you always find temporary work and major employers.

UK Tour Operators always employ a huge number of staff from the UK which they send out to Canada to run their local operations there.

These staffs are responsible for looking out for the ski stations themselves, Crystal Holidays and First Choice ski.

For a certain fee, you can pay to undergo a ski or snowboard instructor course with any number of training companies based in Canada. Courses usually run from 4 to 12 weeks and sometimes you acquire work experience and even a guaranteed job with the price.

Sunshine Village

Sunshine Village, is a ski resort in Canada where you can also find work if you are a snow enthusiast.

Surely you must feel some attraction to try the huge slopes full of snow in Canada, skiing or snowboarding on them, it has to be a unique and incomparable sensation!

Sunshine Village is a ski resort located within Banff National Park, in Alberta, Canada. It is one of the three main ski resorts located in Banff National Park.

Situated in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, approximately 1.5 hours west of the city of Calgary.

There are 10 ski lifts and 107 slopes in the alpine valley formed by the three mountains that make up Sunshine Village.

Each fall and throughout the season, Sunshine Village hires over 600 people to work on its snow equipment and you could be one of them. It offers an incredible seven-month work experience in the snow yearly.

Its employees come from all over the world, different countries, social classes and cultures, recruiting a wide variety of nationalities.

How to work in Sunshine Village

There are various jobs that you can be employed in, and just like every other ski resort out there in Canada we advice you visit their employment portal to get full details.
